What Does Concrete Cure Time Actually Mean?

November 8, 2024 | 4 min read | Wagner Concrete Co.

After a concrete pour, homeowners often ask: when can I walk on it? When can I drive on it? When is it fully done? These are curing questions, and the answers are more nuanced than most people expect.

Curing Is Not Drying

The most common misconception: concrete gets strong as it dries out. The opposite is closer to true. Concrete gains strength through a chemical reaction called hydration — cement reacts with water to form strong crystalline compounds. This reaction continues for weeks and requires moisture. Concrete that dries out too fast before curing is complete is weaker than concrete that was kept moist during the process. This is why we apply a curing compound after every pour — to slow evaporation and keep moisture available for the hydration reaction.

The Curing Timeline

Concrete reaches strength milestones over time. At 24–48 hours, there is enough strength for foot traffic (walk carefully). At 7 days, approximately 70% of design strength is reached — passenger vehicles are safe. At 28 days, the concrete reaches full design strength — heavy vehicles, equipment, and full loads are fine.

The 28-day milestone is industry-standard — concrete specifications are tested and rated at 28 days. Beyond that point, concrete actually continues to slowly gain strength for years.

Temperature Effects

Hydration is temperature-sensitive. Cold weather slows curing; hot weather accelerates it but can cause rapid evaporation that weakens the surface if not managed. In Fort Smith summers, hot weather curing requires more attention to surface moisture retention than cold weather pours. All of this is managed as part of proper installation.
