How to Extend an Existing Concrete Patio

December 28, 2024 | 4 min read | Wagner Concrete Co.

A patio that made sense when you first moved in sometimes gets outgrown — the family got bigger, you want room for more furniture, or you're adding an outdoor kitchen. The good news: extending a concrete patio is absolutely doable. Here's what the process looks like.

Can You Match the Existing Concrete?

This is the first thing homeowners ask. Honestly, an exact color match is difficult. Concrete changes color as it ages and weathers — a new pour alongside a 10-year-old slab will look different, at least initially. This fades over time as the new concrete weathers, but it won't be invisible at first. If appearance continuity is critical, options include coloring the new pour to match as closely as possible, or using a contrasting finish intentionally as a design element.

The Expansion Joint

New concrete poured adjacent to existing concrete must be separated by an expansion joint — typically a strip of foam backer board or a saw-cut filled with flexible sealant. This allows both slabs to move independently without cracking each other. Connecting new concrete directly to old without a joint is a mistake that leads to cracking at the seam.

Base Preparation Under the Addition

The new portion needs the same base preparation as any other concrete pour — proper compaction and gravel base. We don't skip this just because the existing patio is already there. The base under the new section is independent of the existing slab.

When a Full Replacement Makes More Sense

If the existing patio is in poor condition — cracked, uneven, or badly stained — an extension often doesn't make sense. In those cases, a full replacement that unifies the entire space is a better investment. We'll give you an honest recommendation during the free estimate. Call (479) 551-1642.
