When homeowners get driveway quotes, they often compare price per square foot without thinking about how thick the concrete is. But thickness is one of the most important variables in how long your driveway will last and how much weight it can handle.
Standard Residential Thickness: 4 Inches
The standard for residential driveways is 4 inches of concrete over a properly prepared base. This handles passenger vehicles, SUVs, and light trucks without issue. When installed correctly with proper base preparation and reinforcement, a 4-inch slab is appropriate for the vast majority of homeowners in Fort Smith and Western Arkansas.
When to Go Thicker: 5 or 6 Inches
If you park heavy vehicles on your driveway — diesel pickups, trailers, RVs, or commercial vehicles — stepping up to 5 or 6 inches provides meaningful additional strength. The extra cost is modest relative to the total job, and the long-term durability improvement is significant. We recommend discussing your vehicle use during the estimate so we can spec the right thickness for your situation.
Thickness vs. Strength (PSI)
Thickness and concrete strength (measured in PSI) work together. We use high-strength concrete as our standard — a harder, denser mix that resists cracking and surface wear better than entry-level mixes. Don't let a contractor talk you into thin concrete with a high PSI claim — both matter, and neither replaces the other.
Why Cheap Bids Often Cut Thickness
One of the easiest ways to lower a bid is to reduce concrete thickness. Going from 4 inches to 3.5 inches saves material cost but produces a noticeably weaker slab. Always ask your contractor what thickness is included in the quote — it should be clearly stated in writing. Ours always is. Call (479) 551-1642 for a free written estimate.
