Exposed Aggregate Driveways: Pros, Cons, and Costs

September 5, 2024 | 5 min read | Wagner Concrete Co.

If you've ever noticed a driveway that looks like rough natural stone embedded in the surface — that's exposed aggregate. It's one of the most popular decorative concrete finishes for residential driveways, and for good reason.

What Is Exposed Aggregate?

Exposed aggregate concrete is created by placing the slab as normal, then washing and brushing the surface before it fully sets to remove the outer layer of cement paste. This reveals the natural stone, gravel, and aggregate mixed into the concrete. The result is a textured, multi-tonal surface that looks organic and distinctive compared to plain gray concrete.

The Pros

The biggest advantage is appearance — exposed aggregate looks far more interesting than broom-finished concrete, with depth and natural texture that improves curb appeal significantly. It's also highly slip-resistant — the rough texture provides excellent traction, even when wet, making it a smart choice for sloped driveways. It's durable — the aggregate adds abrasion resistance, and the texture hides minor surface wear well. And it's genuinely distinctive — not every driveway in the neighborhood looks the same.

The Cons

The main drawback is that exposed aggregate is harder to clean than a smooth or broom-finished surface — debris gets trapped in the texture and requires a pressure washer rather than a simple rinse. It also requires sealing every 2–3 years to maintain color and protect against moisture damage. And it costs more than basic concrete — typically $2–$4 per square foot more than a standard broom finish.
