Concrete Walkways and Pathways: Practical and Polished

January 30, 2025 | 4 min read | Wagner Concrete Co.

Concrete walkways and pathways are often an afterthought — but they do more for a property's appearance and function than most homeowners realize. A well-designed walkway defines the entry to your home and connects outdoor spaces in a clean, permanent way.

Width Matters More Than You Think

Standard residential walkways are 3 feet wide — enough for one person, but tight for two. If your walkway connects your driveway to your front door or leads to a frequently used outdoor area, 4 feet is a better starting point. It allows two people to walk side by side comfortably and feels open rather than cramped.

Finish Options for Walkways

Broom finish is standard and practical. Stamped concrete can make a front entry walkway look genuinely impressive. Exposed aggregate is an excellent middle ground — more texture and visual interest than plain concrete, at a moderate cost premium. Scoring patterns (saw-cut lines in a grid or geometric pattern) on a broom-finished slab can add design interest at minimal additional cost.

Lighting Considerations

If you're planning landscape lighting along your walkway, now is the time to run conduit before the concrete is poured. Adding conduit during construction costs almost nothing; running it under a finished concrete slab later is expensive and disruptive.

Tying Walkways Into Your Landscape

Concrete walkways work best when they're integrated with your landscaping plan — appropriate width, natural transitions to lawn or planting beds, and drainage that carries water away from both the slab and foundation.
