Pool Deck Options: Why Concrete Is the Top Choice

March 20, 2025 | 5 min read | Wagner Concrete Co.

If you're adding or replacing a pool deck, you have several material options. But when you weigh durability, safety, maintenance, and cost, concrete consistently comes out on top. Here's why.

Durability Around Water

Pool decks take a beating — constant UV exposure, foot traffic, pool chemicals, and standing water. Concrete handles all of these better than wood or pavers. Wood decks require annual sealing, staining, or replacement of rotted boards. Pavers tend to shift and settle around pool perimeters due to soil moisture fluctuation. Concrete, when installed correctly on a stable base, stays put for decades.

Safety First: Slip Resistance

A pool deck is often wet. The finish you choose has a major impact on safety. Broom finish and exposed aggregate both provide excellent traction when wet. Smooth trowel finishes are not appropriate for pool decks — too slippery. We always recommend a textured finish for any pool surround application.

Decorative Options

Pool decks are an area where homeowners often invest in a decorative finish — and rightly so. Stamped concrete in a flagstone or travertine pattern is enormously popular for pool surrounds. Colored concrete, exposed aggregate, or a combination of finishes can make the pool area look resort-like. The options are genuinely impressive.

Heat and Comfort

One drawback of dark-colored concrete in full sun: it can get hot. Lighter integral colors, textured finishes, or concrete overlays formulated for cool surfaces help manage this. We can discuss finish options that balance appearance with comfort. Call or text (479) 551-1642 for a free pool deck estimate.
