Can You Pour Concrete in Cold Weather?

November 10, 2024 | 4 min read | Wagner Concrete Co.

A common question this time of year: can you pour concrete when it's cold outside? The short answer is yes — with the right precautions. Here's what you need to know about concrete and cold weather in the Fort Smith area.

Why Cold Weather Is a Problem for Concrete

Concrete gains strength through a chemical process called hydration. This process slows significantly when temperatures drop below 50°F and essentially stops at or below freezing. If fresh concrete freezes before it reaches adequate strength, the ice crystals damage the internal structure — permanently weakening the slab in ways that can't be undone.

What "Cold Weather Concrete" Actually Means

The concrete industry defines cold weather as any period where the air temperature falls below 40°F for more than three consecutive days. In Western Arkansas, true cold weather is more occasional than prolonged — which means winter concrete work is generally manageable with proper planning rather than something to avoid entirely.

How We Handle It

When temperatures are marginal, we take several precautions: using hot water in the mix to raise the initial concrete temperature, selecting accelerating admixtures that speed up early strength gain, and covering the fresh slab with insulating blankets to retain heat during curing. For anything approaching freezing, we take extra care and sometimes wait for a better weather window rather than risk the outcome.

Arkansas Winters: Usually Workable

Fort Smith winters are mild compared to much of the country. Most winter days in this region stay above 40°F, and truly hard freezes are short-lived. We work year-round and assess each situation individually. If the forecast looks problematic for a scheduled pour, we'll communicate proactively and reschedule rather than compromise the work.
