The Best Finish Options for Concrete Driveways

Most people picture a plain gray slab when they think of a concrete driveway. But the finish you choose affects appearance, slip resistance, cost, and long-term performance. Here's what your options look like.

Broom Finish (Most Common)

A broom finish is the standard for most residential driveways. After the concrete is screeded and floated, a broom is dragged across the surface to create light texture. It's practical, slip-resistant, and clean-looking. It's also the most affordable finish option. For most homeowners, broom finish hits the right balance of performance and cost.

Exposed Aggregate

Exposed aggregate is created by washing away the surface cream before the concrete sets, revealing the natural stone and gravel in the mix. It creates a rough, attractive texture that provides excellent traction and holds up well to traffic. It costs somewhat more than broom finish and requires sealing to maintain its appearance, but it's a significant curb appeal upgrade.

Stamped Concrete

Stamped concrete uses textured rubber stamps pressed into the fresh surface to create patterns — brick, slate, flagstone, and more. Combined with integral color, it produces a dramatically different look. Stamped driveways are the highest-end option and cost more per square foot, but the visual result is impressive and the material is still as durable as any other concrete.

Smooth Trowel Finish

A smooth trowel finish produces a flat, dense surface. It's less common on driveways due to reduced slip resistance when wet, but works well in covered areas or when decorative considerations are the priority. It's often used on commercial or garage slab applications.
